England > Southern England > Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire is commuter country but is rather pleasant and there are some impressive houses around the county town of Aylesbury. Waddesdon Manor was built for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild and houses the baron's art collection along with some fine French furniture and porcelain.

Click on the headings to find out more: Claydon House as home to Florence Nightingale for a while and there's a museum displaying her Crimean War mementos. The grand rooms in the house are decorated in baroque rococo style.

Stowe Landscape Gardens (four miles north of Buckingham) is a lovely private school with the gardens famous for their 32 temples. In the 1700's the owner was Sir Richard Temple whose family motto was Templa Quam Delecta meaning How Delightful are your Temples? He would have had a boring old time if he were born into the Button family - Buttonus Quam Delecta?

The Chiltern Hills cross southern Buckinghamshire and are fine for a refreshing walk. Wendover, on the Ridgeway, is a good base. Nearby Coombe Hill is the highest point in the Chilterns.

Ivinghoe Beacon is a bare hill but was once the site for a beacon set up to summons men to arms in the event of a Spanish invasion. Nearby is Pitstone Windmill, the country's oldest windmill, dating back to 1627.
