Here are the wide skies and picturesque countryside of Norfolk and Suffolk, the ancient university city of
Cambridge, wide expanses of Fenland, unique wetlands harbouring thousands of birds and small animals, stately
homes, hilltop walks, Roman treasures, wild animal parks, woodlands and charming little houses clustered around
village ponds...
If you've ever admired those bucolic and unmistakably English landscape paintings of John Constable (1776-1837),
you'll have some idea of the appearance of at least a part of East England. The wide skies and picturesque
countryside of Norfolk and Suffolk provided inspiration for Constable, Gainsborough and many other English
artists.
Norfolk and Suffolk's broad expanses attract filmmakers, too. Stanley Kubrick's final opus, Eyes Wide Shut,
starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, was shot partly at Elveden Hall and Thetford Forest in Norfolk.
To the north, Norfolk and Suffolk are skirted by the counties of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. Cambridgeshire
is best known for its ancient university city of Cambridge (the name derives from a bridge over the river Cam),
where students from Britain and around the world strive for academic excellence (as they have since 1284 AD).
Ely Cathedral holds the same distinction, and the architecture of Ely town is little changed since the Middle Ages.
Britain's 17th century dictator Oliver Cromwell was familiar with Ely Cathedral - he spent most of his life in this
part of England. The surroundings today are surprisingly similar to what they would have been when Cromwell was a
boy. Cambridgeshire has wide expanses of Fenland, unique wetlands harbouring thousands of birds and small animals.
Along East England's southern border, the counties of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex offer stately homes, hilltop
walks, Roman treasures, wild animal parks, woodlands and charming little houses clustered around village ponds.
