Northampton itself has more history than actual places to see. But it is home to two of the country's finest
Saxon churches, the Grand Prix motor racing circuit Silverstone and the final resting place of Princess Diana
in the grounds of Althorpe Park (take the A428 northwest from Northampton). Althorpe (pronounced Altrup)
continues to attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year..
Princess Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, worried that she would be hunted in death as she was in life,
has had metal plates laid under the turf above her grave.
There is an excellent Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne (eight miles south of Northampton).
The two Saxon castles are All Saints Brixworth (eight miles north) and All Saints, Earls Barton,
(eight miles east). Considering the former dates back to 680 (with Roman tiles from an earlier building)
and it was raided by Vikings in the 9th Century, it's in pretty good condition. All Saints,
Earls Barton, has a stunning tower and was probably built during the reign of Edgar the
Peaceful in the late 900's. Wouldn't it be nice if the world still had rulers under
that naming system? Charles the Wacky? Elizabeth the Surly, perhaps? Presidents
Richard the Tricky, Bill the Non-Inhaler or George the Not-So-Peaceful? - Just a thought..!!
