England's Northwest prides itself on its friendliness and some of England's greatest unspoiled scenery, particularly in the stunning landscapes around
Cheshire. Cheshire's county town of Chester, with its Tudor- inspired architecture, Roman heritage and encircling red sandstone walls, is a true delight
that many visitors to Britain miss. Cheshire also offers fabulous stately homes, ancient castles and great museums.
It's an English cliche that "the further north you go, the friendlier folk become", and like most cliche's, there's more than a grain of truth to it.
The Northwest is also Great Britain's powerhouse - a reference to its talent, drive, energy and bravado rather than just to its industrial past.
If you expect it to be full of industrial relics, you'll be surprised.
Not that there's anything wrong with industrial relics. If you like them, there's no shortage. Northwest England was the birthplace of the Industrial
Revolution. It has given the world the Rolls Royce motorcar, the first passenger railway train, and The Beatles (who'd have thought lead singer Paul
would end up Sir Paul McCartney, knight of the realm?) More recent musical upstarts also from the Northwest are Oasis, Take That and Simply Red.
Not to forget some of the best-loved football teams in the world, the Northwest is also home to Manchester United and Liverpool FC (for those who dare
to mention those two rivals in the same breath). If you want to catch a game of football, this is where to see it. If anything qualifies as a world
sport, it has got to be soccer. Even Americans are playing it these days. Astounding!
The 19th century was Northwest England's heyday, when Victorian industrialists brought fame and fortune to the region, and ships sailed from the great
port of Liverpool to every other port in the world. Great architecture and gracious mansions flowed from all that Victorian wealth. You can stay in
some truly wonderful places in this part of England.
