The province of Leinster takes in an area from the border of Northern Ireland through to the south east corner
of the island itself, with over one and a half million people living in the vibrant, not to be missed city of
Dublin and its surrounding areas alone.
Leinster takes in the counties of Carlow, Dublin & Dublin City,
Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford & Wicklow. It has a long
seacoast, stretching from Dundalk Bay in County Louth to Hook Head in County Wexford. Each successive
wave of invaders since the Vikings founded new town and built strongholds and castles in this beautiful
and fertile region.
Leinster is perceived as the major mover in the rapid economic growth of the Republic of Ireland or the
"Celtic Tiger" as it is also known, particularly with the concentration of information technology businesses
in the region.
However the intensive modernization and accompanying growth of support infrastructure has in
no way changed this region's stunning and beautiful countryside, which includes rugged mountain ranges,
beautiful beaches, and peaceful and isolated river valleys. This province was also the most fiercely
contested and settled area of Ireland, which is reflected throughout in the enormous variety of history
and heritage that characterises almost every part of the region.
Leinster is probably best viewed as a series of sub regions, each sub region encapsulating its own local
geography, unique landscape and separate but co-joined history. Amongst a plethora of things to see and do
in the province is the beautiful and fascinating Boyne Valley, from Trim in County Meath with its stunning
Norman ruins to the very old picturesque and still very busy town of Drogheda on the coast.
It could be
said that every age and era of Irish history has left its mark in this ancient river valley, including
the ancient Boyne valley burial grounds or Tara, the seat of the high kings in County Meath. Centuries of
history are marked by soaring castles, monasteries, stately mansions and the mysterious brooding Celtic
monuments and Neolithic burial chambers, built long before the great pyramids of Egypt.
