Bastille
If you want to visit the infamous prison that was stormed on July 14 1789, bad luck, it's now a traffic roundabout (Place de la Bastille). In the
centre of the Place is the Colonne de Juillet, a winged figure of Liberty. This is a memorial to those who died in the street battles of 1830,
(they are buried under the column), and to those who died in the February Revolution of 1848. The Bastille area is lively and multicultural and
home to Opéra Bastille.
Marais
An old but trendy area, not far from all main attractions with lots of interesting boutiques, small galleries and restaurants. It's also the
centre of gay Paris.
Latin Quarter
It's touristy but for good reason. It's not as much a student area as it once was, but there's still heaps of atmosphere and a choice of
dining in this part of the Left Bank.
Popular, touristy but shouldn't be missed. The name means Elysian Fields where, according to Roman and Greek mythology, happy souls went
after death. Living happy souls now gather there today.
Les Halles
For 850 years this area was the Paris marketplace and today it's still a huge pedestrian zone full of museums, shops, galleries and
restaurants.
Ile de la Cite and Ile St-Louis
The Seine's two islands are full of attractive old houses, parks, famous buildings and spots where romance hangs heavy in the air.
Montmartre
It's busy and touristy, but it's the place where you can feel absolutely 'French'. Lively and leafy, you can see why it was the centre
of bohemian creativity. The famous Moulin Rouge is here.
