Museums in Paris - France - Musee de l'Armee, d'Orsay Picasso, Rodin, Dali, National d'Art Moderne, Louvre, 'Orangerie des Tuileries, Jeu de Paume, l'Erotisme

Paris > To see & do > Paris Musuems & Art Galleries

Musee de l'Armee
Part of the Hotel des Invalides, this is a huge military museum.

Musee d'Orsay
This is home of France's national collection of paintings, sculptures and other works of art created between 1848 and 1914, (where the Louvre bows out and the Musee National d'Art Moderne kicks in). The building itself, a former railway station, is also spectacular.

Musee Picasso
A great museum thanks to donations from Picasso's family to avoid inheritance taxes. Apart from the master's originals it also houses part of Picasso's own art collection.

Musee Rodin
This museum is both relaxing and stimulating with extraordinary marble and bronze sculptures.

Musee National d'Art Moderne
Even though the art gallery has a policy of lending works to other galleries around the world, if you like your art avant-garde, it's worth dropping in.

Musee du Louvre
What can you say? It's huge, it's full of art through the centuries from Venus de Milo to the Mona Lisa and the palace itself is an amazing piece of architecture. It's a must do, but don't even attempt to rush through it all in one visit - you'd need a week. Best to pick an area and take your time.

Musee de l'Orangerie des Tuileries
Home to important impressionist works by Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and Renoir.

Jeu de Paume
Also in the Jardin des Tuileries and originally a court for Royal Tennis, this is now a gallery for contemporary art.

Centre Pompidou
Also an amazing exhibition centre for contemporary works.

Espace Montmartre Salvador Dali
There are over 300 works by the master surrealist Dali on show here (Rue Poulbot, Montmartre).

Musee des Egouts de Paris
Merde. Head to Pont de l'Alma for this insight into the wonders of Paris's underground sewers.

Musée de l'Erotisme
Soft porn or an important part of history? Your call. Erotic art and marital aids from four continents, many centuries over seven floors. Only the French could get away with it...
