Nightlife in Paris - Shows, Caberets, Bars, Restaurants, Opera and Theatre

Paris > To see & do > Nightlife

Restaurants
Paris is a multicultural city and the variety of restaurants reflects this. Any type of cuisine that tickles your fancy is on offer but with limited time, why not go French?

Most restaurants offer a la carte or a 'menu', which is a set price, multi-course offering (cheaper than a la carte). We are reluctant to recommend particular restaurants as chefs and establishments come and go but there are a few restaurant 'institutions' like La Tour d'Argent. Yes, the service will be starched and the meal over-priced, but the view of the Notre Dame and the memory will stay forever (famous for the canard). For a selection of restaurants head to Rue de Lombards and Rue Montorgueil in the Les Halles area; Place du Marche Sainte Catherine in Marais; Rue Mouffetard in the Latin Quarter; Blvd du Montparnasse in Montparnasse; Rue de Lappe in Bastille; Rue des Trois Freres in Montmartre. Of course, you'll also find McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Opera & Theatre
There are two venues for the Opéra National de Paris (Opéra Garnier and Opéra Bastille) where there are excellent performances of ballet and concerts from September to mid-July. Most theatre productions are performed in French.

Nightclubs
There are a number of nightclubs and discothèques that rage into the wee hours but, like restaurants, the 'in' places come and go. Best to ask a concierge at your hotel or pick up a copy of the free LYLO (an acronym for 'Les Yeux, Les Oreilles' or 'The Eyes, The Ears').

Cabaret
Life is a cabaret, old chum... Okay, it's a bit kitsch but not having a night out at the Crazy Horse, Moulin Rouge, Folies Bergères, Paradis Latin or Le Lido would be like not seeing the inside of the Louvre. It won't be cheap, but it will be memorable, not just for the semi-clad gorgeous girls or the music, but for the spectacle itself. Don't be surprised if elephants appear on stage with a waterfall backdrop.

By the way, the Crazy Horse Saloon was the setting for the nightclub scenes in What's New Pussycat, Woody Allen's first film, where he played the part of a nervous backstage dresser for the scantily clad girls. The dialogue went something like this:

     PERSON: What's the pay like?
WOODY: A thousand francs a week.
     PERSON: That's not much.
WOODY: It's all I can afford.

And, for trivia collectors, the first striptease shows began in Paris in 1895 and even then they tried to be 'arty'. The first was titled Le Coucher d'Yvette and had the 'plot' revolving around a girl gradually disrobing as she vainly searched for a flea.
