These formal terraces and chestnut groves are a magnet for locals on warm, sunny days. There are playgrounds for children and games of chess,
cards and boules (pétanque) for adults. It is also home to the Palais du Luxembourg, which has been a palace, a prison, Luftwaffe headquarters
and the Upper House of the French Parliament.
Jardin des Tuileries
These formal gardens start just west of the Louvre are unavoidable and delightful. Once a scene of much bloodshed it is now a place for peaceful
parading.
Bois de Boulogne
On the western edge of the city this informal expanse of woods has lakes, lawns, cycle paths, flower gardens, cafes and is home to Stade Roland
Garos (French Open tennis venue) and horseracing tracks Hippodrome de Longchamp and Hippodrome d'Auteuil.
