Perthshire straddles Lowland and Highland. Not far from Perth, the main centre, are the lochs and glens of
Highland Perthshire. To the south are places of interest like Loch Leven Castle (near Kinross) where Mary,
Queen of Scots was imprisoned for nearly a year before her dramatic escape in 1568. During the first War of
Independence it was held by the English and stormed by William Wallace and visited by Robert the Bruce.
The towns of the area provide excellent shopping, eating out
and accommodation while the countryside boasts heathery hills
and glens, castles, gardens and beaches. Dundee's premier visitor
centre is Discovery Point and is where the RRS Discovery
(Scott's Antarctic exploration vessel) is berthed.
In the past, Dundee's Verdant Works processed jute imported
from India. There are working machines and audiovisual displays
at the centre telling of how Dundee became famous for jute products.
The Arts Centre and the McManus Galleries are also worth a look. Northward lies Angus and outstanding
coastal scenery including lovely sandy beaches.
Right in the heart of Arbroath is the ruined 12th century abbey where the Declaration of Arbroath was written
in 1320. This is arguably the most important document in Scottish history as it states Scotland's case for
self-rule.
Inland are peaceful glens like Glen Esk and Glen Clova. In between the mountains and the sea there are many
places of interest like Brechin Round Tower, the House of Dun (near Montrose), the formal garden of
16th century Edzell Castle and the regal splendour of Glamis Castle, which was the childhood home of
HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and birthplace of the Princess Margaret.
