Edinburgh, the showcase capital of Scotland, is wonderfully striking as it peers down on the relatively flat
landscape of the Lothians. Despite its relatively small population of just under a half million, Edinburgh is
spread out over a wide area, although most of the attractions are within easy walking distance from each other
in the historic city centre. The centre has two very distinct parts; Old Town and New Town, divided by Prince's
Street Gardens. The Old Town has tortuous alleys, tightly packed walkways, and has an eerily medieval feel...
an eventual inspiration for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. New Town was laid out during the Age of Reason during
the Neoclassical period, after a plan to improve the conditions in the city.
Just outside Edinburgh, you will find the beautiful countryside of the Lothians. Here you will find such treasures
as Linlithgow Palace, and Royal Burgh. There are also many traditional Scottish seaside resorts, Grand
Historic Houses, Castles and Churches to discover. Explore the 15th Century Rosslyn Chapel, Hopetoun House,
Museum of Flight, and Glenkinkie Whisky Distillery, along with numerous festivals, entertainment,
and shopping.
