Scotland > Highlands of Scotland & Isle of Skye > Isle of Skye

The Island of Skye is the largest and best known of the Inner Hebrides. Known as Eilean a' Cheò (The Misty Isle) in Gaelic, Skye is an isle full of natural beauty and wildlife (birds from the tiny Goldcrest to the Golden Eagle, mammals from Pygmy Shrew to Red Deer and fish from Saithe to Salmon). The Cuillin Hills, the Red Hills and Blaven are popular with climbers and walkers and it's a great place to hop on a bicycle.

It's not unusual to hear snatches of Scottish Gaelic and Gaelic culture and heritage permeates the atmosphere. Skye has a bridge linking it to the mainland and it offers some of Scotland's most dramatic landforms like Cuillin Hills, the rock formation known as the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing, an assembly of pinnacles, rock towers and secret places. Most people arrive and leave via the Skye Bridge but there are also ferries.

For those interested in genealogy, Skye Kin is a Family History Research Service for the parishes of Duirinish and Bracadale in Skye, including Dunvegan, Edinbane, Glendale, Minginish, Struan, Waternish and all places in between! It offers a friendly, prompt and affordable service providing a range of options from a one-page initial search to a full in-depth report. Skye Kin has access to years of extensive research drawn from local records, documents and contacts including a database of over 2000 family groups and numerous other resources.

The seat of Clan MacLeod is at Dunvegan Castle while the Skye Museum of Island Life recalls the past ways of ordinary crofters and farmers. At Armadle explore the theme of the Clan Donald whose chiefs were the Lords of the Isles. Echoing the dramatic skyline of Skye on a smaller scale there is Rum (the most spectacular) and the quaintly named isles of Eigg, Canna and Muck. These are tiny communities that can be reached by boat from Maillag or Arisaig. This really is 'getting-away-from-it-all'. (Think a lot of Local Hero and a little bit of Deliverence)
