Scotland > West Highlands > Stirling

Close to Stirling, the heather-clad hills and lochs half-hidden in woodlands are stunning.

Rob Roy and Trossachs Visitor Centre is in Callander. Rob Roy MacGregor was a real life Highlander, cattle dealer and outlaw who became a Scottish folk hero (played by Liam Neeson in the Hollywood film Rob Roy).

To the west, Loch Lomond is the most famous of the Scottish lochs. You can cruise the loch or walk the West Highland Way, the official long distance walk through the wooded slopes of its eastern bank.

8 miles south of Callander is Doune Castle, which was used in the BBC's Ivanhoe. It's a 14th century courtyard castle with domestic quarters that include the splendid Lord's Hall with its carved oak screen, musician's gallery and double fireplace. Crainlarich is surrounded by the mighty hills of Breadalbane with the charming village of Killin with its folklore centre nearby.

Tyndrum is a popular stopover place on the West Highland Way for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. In the other direction (south of Loch Lomond) is the former shipbuilding town of Dumbarton with its castle perched on a rock overlooking the River Clyde. Mary, Queen of Scots sailed to France from here as a child in 1548. Nearby is Rosneath peninsula with fine views over Loch Long and the Gare Loch (fiord-like sea lochs).

Pleasure cruises and ferries links the grandeur of the sea-lochs from resorts like Dunoon and Helensburgh.

Helensburgh is known as a 'museum of villas' because of the many fine Victorian houses built by wealthy entrepreneurs. The finest building is Hill House, which was built by famous Scots architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
