Scotland > Scotlands Castle & Whisky Country (Grampians & North East Coast) > North East Coast

Elgin is the second largest town in the North East and is home to the ruined, but beautiful, cathedral and Elgin Museum.

At Fochabers (east) is the world famous food manufacturer Baxter's of Speyside.

Further east is the Macduff Marine Aquarium specializing in the sea life of the northern waters. It has the deepest tank in Britain, where divers feed the fish. Duff House, just moments away in Banff, displays important works of art from the 17th-19th centuries. Scotland's Lighthouse Museum (Kinnaird Head in Fraserburgh) is also worth a visit. Golf, fishing and skiing are just some of the activities to be enjoyed in this relatively undiscovered part of Scotland. For castles galore and beautiful pinewood and birch forests, take the inland road. For dramatic, rugged and unspoiled shores, take the Coastal Trail.

Banff is a historic town, which overlooks the Deveron Estuary and Banff Bay. For two centuries from about 1500, the landed gentry moved to Banff each winter to escape the cold in their castles. The town abounds with plaques placed on historic buildings noting who lived where. It is interesting to take a walk around town.
