Scotland > West Highlands > Stirling

In olden days all routes led to Stirling. Because of its strategic position, whoever held Stirling Castle controlled the Scottish nation. The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, the final conflict of the Scottish Wars of Independence, was fought within sight of its walls. Led by Robert the Bruce the Scots defeated the English occupying forces and gained three centuries of independence. Stirling Caste is considered the grandest of all Scotland's castles with outstanding architecture - the Great Hall and gatehouse of James IV, the Renaissance Palace of James V and the Chapel Royal of James VI. Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned there in 1543 and narrowly escaped death by fire in 1566.

Close by is the National Wallace Monument, a tribute to Scotland's first freedom fighter Sir William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson in the Oscar-winning Braveheart).

Argyll's Lodging is the finest and most complete surviving example of a 17th century residence, magnificently restored and furnished as it would have been during the 9th Earl of Argyll's occupation in 1680.

Castle Campbell (10m east of Stirling) is a 15th century fortress and was the lowland stronghold for the Campbell's. It is also known as 'Castle Gloom' and there are stunning views from the parapet walk.
