Scotland > West Highlands > West Highlands

Enjoy the wild setting of Crarae Garden on Loch Fyne, the beauty of Arduaine Garden south of Oban or the grand Younger Botanic Garden by Dunoon with its giant redwoods and thriving rhododendrons.

The resort and ferry port of Oban has a choice of cruises as well as the Highland Theatre, Oban Distillery, Oban Glass and A World in Miniature.

Just south is little Kilmartin and renowned prehistoric sites. There are many magnificent seascapes wall the way down the Kintyre Peninsula. Near its southern end is Campbeltown (ferries connect to Northern Ireland) with its famed Machrihanish Golf Course and sunsets over the Mull of Kintyre. (Bet you can't go there without humming the Paul McCartney hit!)

Returning north along the shores of Loch Fyne (and a fine loch it is too) is the fascinating Auchindrain Highland Township - a survivor of early rural times. Inveraray is one of Scotland's most handsome towns. Attractions include the Inveraray jail museum and Inveraray Castle, the seat of the Clan Campbell.

The island of Bute is easy to reach and is a peaceful place with the traditional resort of Rothesay as its main town. 4 miles from Rothesay is the magnificent 19th century stately home, Mount Stuart, a Gothic fantasy in marble and glass.

Rothesay Castle was a favourite residence of the Stewart kings. It's a wonderful example of a 3th century circular castle, which was once attacked by Vikings.

Inchmahome Priory is on an island in the Lake of Menteith (take a ferry from the Port of Menteith, 4m east of Aberfoyle. It's a beautifully situated Augustinian priory founded in 1238 and has much of the building still intact. The four-year-old Mary, Queen of Scots was sent here for safety following the disastrous Battle of Pinkie in 1547.
